Spring isn’t the only season to get organized; autumn is a perfect time to de-clutter your home, and get things in order for the colder months.
As much as we try to keep things in order after spring cleaning, there’s always a laundry list of things to prep for the next season. With the days getting shorter, why not use the extra time you have indoors to organize your home?
We’ve shared our favorite fall home prep tips below. Free up valuable storage space—both inside and out—and get set for a clutter-free winter.
Swap Out the Seasonal Stuff
One simple way to free up an over-packed dresser or bedroom closet is to swap out your spring and summer wardrobe for more seasonal items. Take the opportunity to sort through your items, and decide if it’s time to give them away (whether too small, worn out or just out of style). Consider doing this in your entryway coat closet or mudroom as well, swapping out jackets and beach bags for warm coats and accessories.
Storage Tip: Pack clothing away in plastic bins or containers to avoid damage from moisture or bugs.
Organize Your Outdoor Living Area
Remember that there are a number of items outdoors that need your attention before the cold comes. Harsh weather can damage wood, wicker or aluminum, so pay extra attention to your porch, patio or deck furniture at summer’s end.
Also, consider storing outdoor yard maintenance items – like garden tools, outdoor power equipment and lawn mowers. These can take up valuable space in a garage that you might need for shovels, snow blowers, salt or other winter items.
Storage Tip: Give items a complete clean before storing to prevent damage. And, use a climate-controlled storage unit for added protection.
Gauge Your Garage Space
It’s common to turn to your garage for storage of your summer items. But once winter hits, you’ll want to be able to park your vehicles. Make room in this space for your vehicle now; you’ll be happy you did.
Remove items you know you won’t need to access until next spring or summer (bikes, pool equipment, gardening tools, patio furniture, etc.) and store these items off-site. With bigger items out of the way, you’ll save a significant amount of space for your car, and other winter necessities.
Storage Tips: Be sure to choose a storage facility with a high level of security. If you unexpectedly need access to your unit, you’ll want to feel safe doing so.
Storage For All Seasons
Each season gives us an opportunity to reorganize our home and prepare for the next. While you can utilize a self storage unit at any time of the year, the harsh weather of winter makes it especially important to protect your belongings and be prepared.
