How to Relieve the Stress of Moving with Self-Storage

Security Self Storage Relieve the Stress of MovingMoving ranks as one of the most stressful life events. Your life is disrupted as you make adjustments to your daily routines. Plus, organizing, packing and keeping track of your belongings is a hassle.  Then, once you move, you have to figure out where to put everything.

However, take away some of your stress by storing your packed-up possessions. A self-storage unit is an option that offers many benefits. It’s one less thing to think about as you go through the home buying and selling process.

Keep Your Belongings Conveniently Out of the Way

One of the hardest aspects of moving is deciding where to put everything once packed, especially if you’re still showing your current home. Self-storage units offer a convenient solution that can be temporary or long-term. Keep your stacks of boxes and excess furniture out of the way, yet accessible. The following are common situations in which a self-storage unit is most useful.

  • Temporary Storage: It is common to have a gap between your closing and moving date. Or, you may be relocating to a new city for a new job. A self-storage unit is a place to store your belongings until you’re ready to move.
  • Downsizing: Empty nesters moving into a smaller space may need extra storage. They store items like furniture or children’s toys and clothing that will get handed down and used again.
  • Moving In Together: Newlyweds or friends moving in together can have duplicate items that won’t fit in their new space. Self-storage can keep it out of the way until you decide what to do with it.

Protection With Climate Control

Not all storage units are the same. The type of unit you select depends on the items you have to store and the time of year. You should take extra measures to protect your belongings.

Climate-controlled units are designed to keep your belongings safe from indoor and outdoor elements. They are temperature and humidity controlled to prevent sensitive items from growing mold or picking up a scent. Attics, basements or garages can’t always protect your belongings from these factors.

Some examples of items that should be stored in a climate-controlled unit include:

It’s easy to store items anywhere out of convenience, but climate-controlled units can offer both convenience and protection. Considering the safety of your things ahead of time will save you the stress of having to replace something later, or potentially losing something irreplaceable.

Look for Extra Amenities

Many self-storage companies provide convenient features and amenities to enhance your experience. Here are a few we recommend researching:

  • Security Features: Look for facilities that have state-of-the-art technology, including features like 24-hour DVR surveillance, alarm systems, sophisticated locks, ample lighting and pass-code entry gates.
  • Flexible Leasing Options: Depending on your situation, you may only need temporary storage. Companies that offer month-to-month options with no long-term commitments are ideal. Make sure you understand the move-out notice policies and any penalties for moving out early.
  • Free Moving Truck: Certain self-storage companies offer unique features. For example, at Security Self Storage, we offer a free moving truck for moving your items to your unit (certain restrictions apply). We drive the truck to your home, wait while you load it, and then drive it back to your storage unit.

Great post, Norm. In my experience, one of the best ways to relieve stress when it comes to moving is to allow plenty of time ahead of the move to get everything ready and prepared. I think some people underestimate the whole ordeal and/or leave it until the last minute to get everything sorted, which is where the stress really shows.

I think that self storage is a great way to relieve some of the stress that comes from moving. It can keep your belongings out of the way while you show your house off to sell. It's also really good for people moving in together, so you can have a place to store all of the extra items. Thanks for sharing!

I am actually thinking about having a self-storage unit for when I move into my new apartment so that we have room for everything right now, I don't think I will have enough room for my things. The apartment is small and My fiancee isn't going to move in for a few weeks. It would be temporary which is fine but it would help me get out of the place I am at now.

My wife and I are planning to move this summer. We are still trying to figure out where to store our stuff for a few weeks. I really like your idea to store boxes and excess furniture while the house is being shown so that it looks better. This gives me some more things to look into. Thanks for sharing!

I'm hoping to sell my house and move this summer, and I think self storage would be a big help. We want to clear out some of our belongings for when we show the house, but don't have a new home to move them into yet. I'll take your advice and look into the extra amenities that are offered and see if there is anything else that could help us with the move. Thanks!

wow, I was so astonished to know that they go to such extremes to keep things protected in storage units. I had no clue they were temperature and humidity controlled!! I have noticed that everything that I put in storage does end up getting that attic smell. Thanks for your information.

That's a really good point that a storage unit can help you downsize. I'm definitely a hoarder and my home is filled with tons of stuff I've acquired over the years. I'll have to rent out a storage unit so that I can keep all my stuff in there and enjoy the space in my home more. Thanks for the awesome advice!

A storage unit is absolutely vital in keeping belongings "conveniently out of the way". When I moved in with my wife we had a lot of duplicate furnishings and nowhere to put them. We put them into storage and now that we have a larger space that can use them we got them back out. Storage is a great alternative to selling or giving away things you may need later.

I love the idea of keeping my things out of the way during a move. My husband and I have recently gotten married and we have duplicate things like you said. We have decided to try and sell some of the things we don't need. Until we are able to find a buyer we will just place the belongs in a storage unit. Thanks for the tips!

I had quite a joyous and stressful move just 10 days ago when I moved into an apartment with three of my girl friends. We learned that I have enough stuff to fill my own house. Of course, as with all days that you want to go smoothly, my day had to have several hiccups. My ankle gave out and had to be wrapped, people showed up to move into my old apartment before I was even gone or had a chance to clean, and the friend I asked to tow our trailer didn't even have a tow hitch. Though everything worked out all right, I wish I had chosen to rent a small storage unit to hold all the things I packed early because it would have made my day calmer.

    Hey Norm,
I agree with everything you're saying, the climate-controlled storage units are a must if your looking to store your belonging for a longer period of time. I have seen people loose all the property in a unit because of the humidity and mold!!!
It's a shame! Storage facilities should inform the client of the list of "Best Practices" on ways to pack your stuff for storage.
    Great Post Norm!
