How to Stage the Perfect Kitchen to Sell Your Home

It’s time to put your home on the market, and your list of preparations is growing. So, how will you prioritize your to-dos, and make everything just right for your open house?

The kitchen is one of the first places you should start.

Kitchens can be a major selling point for potential buyers, so spending extra time and effort into staging it can increase your chances of impressing buyers. In fact, 81% of buyers focus on kitchen features when considering their purchase.

Continue reading for three ways you can stage your perfect kitchen to sell your home.

1. The Cleaner, The Better

Cleaning before an open house is a no-brainer, but it's time to go above and beyond your normal duties. Imagine how you would expect a home’s kitchen to appear if you were attending an open house.

A dirty kitchen won’t leave a good impression, or make buyers want this as a place to cook a meal for their families. When cleaning your kitchen for an open house, a few tips to keep in mind are:

  • Clean windows – nobody wants to see fingerprints.

  • Empty your refrigerator – this helps to neutralize odors.

  • Dust everything – including drapes and lampshades.

  • Organize your cabinets and drawers – you never know when someone may peek inside.

  • Buy new hand towels.

2. Less Is More

In the event you’re staging your kitchen to sell your home, less is always more. A clean and simplified kitchen will help showcase all the room has to offer and allow potential buyers to envision it as their own.

Below are a few quick ways you can cut the clutter in your kitchen:

  • Limit countertop decorations to only one or two items.

  • Remove any extra seating or chairs from around the kitchen table.

  • Choose a centerpiece for the kitchen table, and stick to it as your only accessory.

  • Remove pot racks to avoid giving the impression your kitchen doesn’t have enough storage.

3. Upgrade And Polish

To polish your kitchen, take inventory of items such as:

  • Appliances

  • Furniture

  • Decorations

  • Wallpaper

  • Paint

If any items are broken, or show signs of wear and tear, you need to repair it or remove it altogether. When checking your walls, look out for peeling, scuff marks or paint chips. It could be time to say goodbye to the wallpaper or add a layer of touch-up paint.

During this inventory process, take note of any appliances that aren’t functioning properly or aesthetically pleasing. If your appliances would prevent you from buying the house, invest in upgrading. Buyers will take note of brand new appliances and remember them when it comes time to put in an offer.

4. Store Excess Kitchen Items

Staging your kitchen to sell your home is worth the extra time and effort. But, you may be wondering what you’re going to do with all the excess clutter in the meantime. You don’t have to resort to displacing your kitchen clutter into another room. There are plenty of options for temporary storage during a move.
